What Can You Drive With a Class-B CDL?

The Class-B CDL is a great option for those looking to start a stable and in-demand driving career without operating combination vehicles. It’s a practical and cost-effective choice for many local and regional driving jobs.

You’ll qualify to operate large single vehicles that do not require a trailer over 10,000 pounds.

A Class-B CDL allows you to drive vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, as long as any trailer being towed is 10,000 pounds or less.

With a Class B CDL, you can drive:

Straight trucks (box trucks / delivery trucks)
Dump trucks for construction and landscaping
Garbage trucks and sanitation vehicles
Cement mixers
Large buses (with passenger endorsement)
Utility and service trucks
Local delivery vehicles over 26,001 lbs

Because Class-B focuses on single vehicles rather than combinations, it’s often a great option for drivers looking for local routes, consistent schedules, and hands-on work in their community.

Class A vs Class B CDL: What’s the Difference?

Not sure which CDL is right for you? Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide based on your goals.
Class A CDL:

• Combination vehicles (truck + trailer)
• Total weight: 26,001+ lbs + trailer over 10,000 lbs
• Drive: semi-trucks, flatbeds, reefers, tankers
• Long-haul, regional, and some local routes
• Highest earning potential • More job flexibility

Best for: Drivers who want maximum opportunities and don’t mind longer routes
Class B CDL:

• Single vehicles (no large trailer)
• Vehicle weight: 26,001+ lbs
• Trailer must be under 10,000 lbs
• Drive: dump trucks, box trucks, buses, garbage trucks
• Mostly local routes
• More consistent schedules

Best for: Drivers who want to stay local and have predictable hours
If you want the widest range of driving opportunities, go with Class A. If you prefer local work and a simpler path to getting started, Class B is a great choice.

Week 1: Foundation & Skills Building

Your Class B CDL training starts with a mix of classroom instruction, hands-on lab work, and real-world observation — a full 40 hours designed to prepare you for the Washington State CDL exam.

During this first week of CDL training, you’ll learn:

• Highway driving fundamentals and safety procedures
• Hazard awareness and defensive driving techniques
• Speed and space management for commercial vehicles
• Basic vehicle control and CDL safety standards

You’ll also begin hands-on commercial driving practice, including:

• City driving in real traffic conditions
• Backing maneuvers and vehicle positioning

By the end of week one, you’ll have a strong foundation in Class B CDL skills, increased confidence behind the wheel, and be fully prepared for the next stage of training.

Week 2: Victory Lane

This is where your CDL training comes together.

In week two, you’ll apply everything you’ve learned and prepare to pass the Washington State CDL exam.

During your final week, you’ll focus on:

• Precision backing maneuvers (straight back and offset backing)
• City route driving in real-world conditions
• Full pre-trip vehicle inspections required for the CDL test
• Safe operation and control of Class B commercial vehicles

You’ll spend five days in hands-on training, building confidence and sharpening your skills with guidance from experienced CDL instructors.

By the end of week two, you’ll have the knowledge, practical experience, and confidence needed to pass your CDL test at the DOL and begin your career as a Class B CDL driver.
