What Can You Drive With a Class-A Automatic CDL?

The Class A Automatic CDL qualifies you to operate large commercial combination vehicles using automatic transmission trucks.

You’ll be licensed to drive vehicles where the truck and trailer combined weigh 26,001 pounds or more, and the trailer itself weighs more than 10,000 pounds.

That includes most modern fleet trucks on the road today — many major carriers now use only automatic transmissions.

With a Class A Automatic CDL, you can drive:
• Tractor-trailers (automatic transmission only)
• Refrigerated (reefer) trucks
• Dry van freight trucks
• Many regional and long-haul fleet vehicles
• Large combination vehicles over 26,001 lbs

Important note: An Automatic CDL includes a transmission restriction, meaning you cannot operate manual transmission commercial vehicles unless you upgrade your license later.

Full-Time Schedule - Finish in only 4 weeks!

Monday - Friday: 8 am - 4 pm

We offer three different course schedules. Choose from one of the below:

Mornings: Monday - Friday: 8 am - 12 pm
Afternoons: Monday - Friday: 1 pm - 5 pm
Evenings: Monday - Friday: 4 pm - 8 pm

Week 1: Getting Started

Welcome to orientation week! In your first week, we’ll build the foundation for your new career. Even if you’ve never sat in a truck before, our instructors will guide you step by step. In this 40-hour segment, you’ll learn the basics of operating a Class A automatic truck, including classroom sessions on weight management, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and safe driving in different conditions like rain or snow. By the end of the week, you’ll be comfortable with the basics and ready to move forward.

Week 2: Skills in Action

Week two gets hands-on with drive time in our automatic trucks, alongside short classroom lessons. You’ll practice essential skills like backing up a trailer, city driving, and highway driving. We’ll cover tire chaining, connecting a trailer, and operating the truck and its systems with confidence. Our instructors demonstrate everything first, then guide you as you practice. By the end of this week, you’re halfway to your CDL and already driving like a pro!

Week 3: Advanced Driving Practice

This week is all about building muscle memory and mastering the skills you’ll use every day on the road. You’ll get extended drive time to teach you about city and highway driving. We’ll simulate warehouse dock backing, parking maneuvers, and introduce advanced techniques like straight-line backing, offset backing, and alley docking. With the simplicity of automatic transmission, you’ll be able to focus more on safe driving habits, maneuvering, and situational awareness.

Week 4: Graduation Week

Welcome to Victory Lane! Week four is where you bring it all together. You’ll review everything you’ve learned and run through our final training evaluations to make sure you’re confident, skilled, and ready for the next step. Our instructors will guide you up to your final tests and sharpen your abilities so you’re fully prepared for the CDL exam at the DOL. By the end of this week, you’ll graduate with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to join the thousands of drivers who have launched their careers through New Sound CDL School.
