Welcome to orientation week! This first week of Class A manual CDL training is all about building a strong foundation for your new career.
No experience? Never driven a manual truck before? No problem. Our experienced instructors will guide you step-by-step and teach you everything you need to know.
During this 40-hour training week, you’ll cover:
• Basic driving fundamentals
• Manual transmission introduction and control
• Weight management and load awareness
• Pre-trip and post-trip inspections
• Safe driving techniques in different conditions, including adverse weather
You’ll combine classroom instruction with hands-on learning, giving you the confidence to move into real driving scenarios in the weeks ahead.
In week two, your CDL training becomes more hands-on as you begin combining classroom instruction with real driving experience in our modern manual transmission trucks.
You’ll start developing essential commercial driving skills, including:
• Backing up a truck and trailer
• City driving in real-world conditions
• Proper trailer coupling and uncoupling
• Tire chaining and safety procedures
• Operating key truck and trailer systems
Our instructors will walk you through each skill, then give you plenty of time to practice so you can build confidence and consistency behind the wheel.
By the end of week two, you’ll be halfway to earning your Class A CDL and starting your new career.

Week three is focused on maximizing your hands-on driving time and sharpening your skills to meet and exceed state and federal CDL requirements.
You’ll continue building real-world driving experience while practicing advanced maneuvers, including:
• City and road driving in varied conditions
• Backing into warehouse docks and tight spaces
• Alley docking, straight back, and offset backing
• Safe navigation in busy environments
We emphasize safe driving habits and precision, so you feel confident handling a Class A manual vehicle in real job situations.
By the end of this week, you’ll be comfortable performing key maneuvers and operating your truck with control and confidence.
You’ve made it to Victory Lane!
In your final week of CDL training, you’ll bring everything together and prepare for your Washington State CDL exam.
During this week, you’ll:
• Complete full pre-trip inspections
• Perform all required backing maneuvers
• Practice real-world driving routes
• Go through final test preparation and evaluations
Our instructors will work closely with you to make sure you feel confident, prepared, and ready for test day.
By the end of the week, you’ll graduate from the program with the skills and confidence needed to pass your CDL exam at the DOL — joining over 1,800 successful graduates who have launched their careers with New Sound CDL School.
